Congo Nile Trail Kibuye to Gisenyi is a two-day hiking adventure through the scenic landscapes of western Rwanda. Starting in Kibuye (Karongi), the journey follows sections of the Congo Nile Trail through rolling hills, farmland, villages and rural communities, with spectacular views of Lake Kivu along the way.
Option1: Hike 14 Km
This 14 km is from Karongi starts with a short boat ride to the Burunga starting point and get ready for the hike and the boat awaits at the end of the hike and heading to Kinunu by motorboat. Karongi is one of the most unique places for hiking in Rwanda as it has numerous of bays and islands. Pass banana forests and the rich diversity of landscapes, cross Musogoro River on the suspension bridge, then follow small the footpaths of the local people up and down over some hills, down to the lake, proceed with 1,5 hours motorboat to Kinunu.
Option 2: Boat ride from kibuye to Kinunu
Kibuye boat trip to Rushel Kivu Resort Departs not later than 3 pm, The two-hours boat ride from Kibuye to Ruchel Kivu Lodge via Nyamunini, popularly known as the Napoleon Island. Clients see fruit bats and look for velvet monkeys living on neighboring Nyenyeri (star) Island. Relax and swim at the hotel beach in the evening at Rushel Kivu Resort or do the coffee tour from crop to cup at the neighboring Kinunu coffee washing station is welcomed and Night fishing Experience as option.
Overnight in Kinunu
the 13.4 Km Hike from Kinunu to Cyimbili passes through small villages and harbors. The stage starts with the charming views of the amazing landscapes and coffee plantations of Kinunu passes near or along Lake Kivu and offers some of the most varied hiking in Rwanda. In the middle of this stage, hikers have opportunities to experience some community-based tourism products including the beekeeping experience, or/and coffee experience as option. Take a boat transfer maximum of an hour from Cyimbili to Gisenyi.

We recommend comfortable hiking shoes, lightweight clothing, sun protection, a hat, personal medication if needed, and a small daypack.
Light rain does not necessarily stop the hiking experience. The Congo Nile Trail can be enjoyed in different weather conditions, although the route may be adjusted when conditions become unsuitable or unsafe. Your guide will make the final decision based on the weather and trail conditions.
The minimum age is 4 years old. Children should be accompanied by an adult, and the hiking route can be adapted according to the group’s age and ability.
